Belfast hotelier unveils new luxury venue in French Riviera

Belfast-born hotelier Paddy McKillen is set to open a fifth luxury destination later this summer, the most spectacular in his Maybourne Group’s portfolio and their first hotel in mainland Europe,

The company, which owns Claridge’s, The Connaught and The Berkeley, took on its first hotel outside London, the Montage Beverly Hills, in 2019 – renaming and reimagining it as Maybourne Beverly Hills.

Now the jaw-dropping Maybourne Riviera is set to open its doors, with Mr McKillen saying it “marks a new era” for the group he heads.

The luxury venue is the group’s first newly built property, set into the cliff-face at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, which the man at the helm described as a “truly untouched French gem”.

“We plan to bring the legendary service and spirit of hospitality that have made our London hotels so successful and much loved, building The Maybourne Riviera into one of the great hotels of the world,” added McKillen.

With dramatic panoramic views of the coastline that take in Cap-Martin, Italy, and Monte Carlo, The Maybourne Riviera offers an unrivalled setting high above the glistening Mediterranean Sea.

As well as 69 beautifully appointed rooms and suites with unrivalled views from their own private terraces it will also be a serious gastronomic destination on the Cote d’Azur with a host of restaurants under the creative direction of some of the the world’s top chefs.

The elevated restaurants boast unrivalled views

Mauro Colagreco of three-Michelin star Mirazur in nearby Menton and holder of the No1 ranking in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants, will take the lead at a top floor restaurant with enviable panoramic views – drawing inspiration from the sea.

Super-chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten will also launch his first venture in the South of France, with cuisine inspired by the hotel’s location on the French Italian border, while Japanese chef Hiro Sato will also bring his world class sushi to The Maybourne Riviera.

McKillen, who was born in Belfast, ventured into property after leaving school at 16 to work in his family’s exhaust repair business.

In 2015, the Qatari royal family bought McKillen’s Maybourne Group for a  fee rumoured to be around £1.4 billion and in 2019 he received a £5 million management fee for his oversight of the group.

It is believed that, in addition to his yearly fee, McKillen has a stake in any of future uplift in the Maybourne Hotel Group’s value.
