Bar owner shuts shop in Christmas ‘circuit breaker’

The owner of a popular Belfast pub has decided to close its doors  until the New Year as a Covid “circuit breaker”.

The Sunflower Pub on Union Street, which Pedro Donald, above, opened in 2012, announced on Facebook that due to a number of staff members testing positive for Covid, it has decided to close until January.

A statement said: “It is with a heavy heart that we have decided to close the pub until the New Year. Unfortunately, some of our staff have tested positive for Covid-19, and in the interest of their colleagues and our customers safety, we feel that we have no other choice than to have a circuit breaker until the 3rd January 2022.
“Thank you all for your support and for working with us during this challenging time. Keep washing your hands, wear a mask and look after each other.”

The news comes after the Executive decided on December 16 not to impose any further Covid restrictions.

Ministers are due to meet again on December 22 when it is understood further measures will be considered.
