Scrapping of table service rule for unlicensed premises hailed

A decision to remove the post-lockdown table service requirement for unlicensed hospitality businesses has been welcomed by Retail NI.

Economy Minister Diane Dodds said the rule will be scrapped for unlicensed premises from Saturday, June 5.

However, it will remain a requirement for licensed premises, but with an exemption or those providing meals service in the form of a buffet or carvery.

Reacting to the news, Retail NI chief executive Glynn Roberts said: ““Retail NI had urged the Executive to drop this rule and we welcome this decision as these regulations would have been unworkable for our members and extremely difficult to enforce.

Diane Dodds said the change would help businesses that have made huge efforts

“Moving forward, the Executive Office needs to consult with business directly before they produce regulations which will have a big impact on the economy”

Explaining the change, Minister Dodds explained: “The hospitality industry and the trade bodies have worked incredibly hard to put in place safety measures and mitigations to keep customers safe. I am committed to doing all I can to help businesses in this beleaguered sector to recover.

‘Right direction’

“Today’s decision will enable those outlets that provide buffets and carveries to resume service, as well as fast food and multi-outlets where customers choose food at a counter before sitting down. This includes those in shared seating areas in shopping centres and motorway services.

“This is another welcome step in the right direction both for the industry and for the public as we emerge from the pandemic.”
