Co Down steakhouse for sale after 20 years in business

A steak house in Banbridge has gone on the market as its owners of over 20 years announced “it’s time for a change”.

But the family behind the Bronte Steak House & Grill plan to trade as normal for the time being.

It has been listed for sale for an undisclosed sum through agents Osborne King.

The name of the business pays homage to the area’s links to the Bronte family as the homeland of Patrick Brunty, the father of Charlotte, Anne and Emily Bronte.

The steak house is owned by Ian Clyde and his family, who in December 2021 posted on social media about the impact of Covid passports on the business. Mr Clyde said at the time that the requirements had severely affected bookings.

In a post on the restaurant’s Facebook page this week, Mr Clyde, above, and other family members said: “You may be aware we have placed the Bronte on the market today for sale as a going concern. After nearly 20 years, it’s just time for a change.

“Just to clarify as a family we will remain to operate the Bronte as normal Thursday to Sunday each week (until) a buyer is found to take the business over.

“Should that be in six months or in a few years time, we will not be closing the doors on the Bronte. We remain committed to running our thriving restaurant and we look forward to welcoming you to the Bronte Steakhouse & Grill.”

The restaurant is on Ballynafoy Road, six miles from Banbridge and 11 miles from Newry and is being sols as a freehold, with a fully-fitted “substantial” restaurant with “ample” room and a fitted kitchen.
