Lavery’s bars temporarily close for renovation

Iconic Belfast pub begins major revamp of its ground floor spaces to prepare for the future.

Lavery’s, one of Belfast’s most historic and best-loved pubs, has announced the temporary closure of its Public and Back Bars as it embarks on a full renovation aimed at preserving the venue’s legacy while bringing a fresh energy to its ground floor.

First established in 1918, the Public Bar has welcomed generations of locals and visitors, serving as a central gathering place for everything from pre-match pints to live music sessions. Next door, the Back Bar has earned a reputation as a sanctuary for Belfast’s alternative and creative communities, where artists, musicians, and mavericks found a space that encouraged individuality and open conversation.

In a reflective message shared online, Lavery’s paid tribute to the unique role these bars have played in the life of the city, calling them “the beating heart of the pub” and recalling the countless moments, from first dates to farewell drinks that have unfolded there over the decades.

While the ground floor undergoes its transformation, the rest of the building, including the pool room, middle floor, and The Woodworkers will remain open to the public. The venue has promised to share more about the renovation in the months ahead, as it looks toward a new chapter in its long-standing history.
