East Belfast pizza restaurant closes amid ‘ever increasing costs’

A well-loved pizza restaurant in East Belfast has become the latest hospitality business to shut its doors due to financial pressures.

Sorellina Stone Baked Pizza, located on the Belmont Road, announced its closure on social media, citing the “ever increasing costs” of running a business as the primary reason for the decision.

The closure marks a challenging moment for the hospitality sector in Northern Ireland, which has been grappling with the impact of rising costs and post-pandemic economic recovery. In a heartfelt post shared on its Facebook page on Wednesday, Sorellina addressed its loyal customers and followers, expressing regret over the decision to close.

“Some sad news…after nearly two years of trading, we have had to make the sad and difficult decision to close Sorellina,” the restaurant stated. “Against a background of ever-increasing costs, it has not been possible to maintain our business without compromising our offer and service. Despite all the challenges, it has been an exciting journey, and we would like to thank all our friends and customers for your loyalty and support.”

Sorellina quickly gained a reputation for its delicious stone-baked pizzas and welcoming atmosphere, becoming a favorite spot for locals in the area. The announcement of its closure prompted a wave of responses from customers and food enthusiasts who lamented the loss of another beloved local eatery.

Among those who expressed disappointment were The Gourmet Boys, well-known food reviewers who have long been supporters of the Belfast food scene. “Very sad to see you guys having to make this decision. From day one, it was a pleasure to meet you and eat your amazing food. We’re sorry to see you go,” they commented.

Other customers shared their personal experiences, with one recalling Sorellina’s kindness during the Covid-19 pandemic. “So sorry to hear this. You very kindly delivered food (amazing food!!) to us during the pandemic even though it was beyond your delivery area. Your kindness to nurses working in the Cancer services at Belfast City Hospital will never be forgotten.”
