Historic Belfast stock market listing finds new home

Belfast’s newest hospitality venue, The Stock Exchange, has gained a special piece of the city’s history thanks to an unexpected act of kindness.

Owner Gareth Murphy shared how a framed 1911 stock market listing found its way to the venue, adding a unique historical touch:”In the middle of the build, when it was just launched, I got a message on LinkedIn after we announced we were opening The Stock Exchange from a gentleman involved in trading.”

The trader explained that Belfast once had its own stock exchange in the Assembly Buildings on War Street, right near the new venue. “He told me he had framed a picture of all the daily stock listings from 1911 — the values people could buy that day — along with the names of the stockbrokers operating at the time,” Murphy shared.

“He said he was going to put it in his home office but thought it would be more fitting in our venue,” Murphy continued. “He came down that very day with the framed listing.”

Murphy was moved by the unexpected generosity. “I couldn’t believe the community support. It’s an incredible piece of history over a hundred years old,” he said.

The listing is currently being reframed in a bespoke illuminated presentation case, complete with a commemorative plaque recognising the donation. “It’s going to take pride of place on the wall,” Murphy added. “We’re making it a key feature, telling the story of Belfast’s trading past and how the city has evolved.”

The Stock Exchange, which opened at the end of November was the region’s first Stock market-themed experience, with interactive displays and fully immersive ‘Market Crashes’ for drink prices.

The team commenced work on the vacant site three years ago, paving the way for a £3 million investment and the creation of more than 40 hospitality jobs – 25 new full and part-time jobs will be created at The Stock Exchange.

Restoring a historic landmark building on the city’s iconic Royal Avenue, The Stock Exchange promises a range of new and innovative competitive sociable gaming concepts.
