‘Her story deserves recognition’: Belfast bar celebrates local hero

Belfast’s hospitality scene has a bold new addition with the opening of Seatons of Sailortown, a venue blending history and modernity.

Spearheaded by hospitality entrepreneur Kelvin Collins, the transformation of the former McKenna’s Bar pays tribute to Molly Seaton, a pioneering Northern Irish footballer who broke barriers in the 1920s and 1930s.

“Molly Seaton was a local hero in every sense. A woman who defied the odds in a male-dominated sport, and her story deserves recognition,” Kelvin explained. Molly’s extraordinary career saw her captain the Irish women’s football team and make history playing for Rutherglen, famously defeating the Dick Kerr Ladies in 1923.

“When I found out that Molly Seaton, from just up the road in north Belfast, was such a pivotal figure in women’s football history, I knew we had to make that connection. It’s about giving her the recognition she truly deserves. Her influence is still felt in women’s sport today, so why not carry her legacy into this venue?” Kelvin said.

The venue balances traditional charm with contemporary updates. Snugs, booths, and a new central fireplace provide warmth and character, while features like a larger bar and modern lighting appeal to today’s visitors. “The fireplace is important because it brings a sense of warmth and community to the space,” Kelvin noted. “It’s a traditional element that makes the space feel homely and inviting.”

As always, Kelvin champions local produce. Seatons highlights Northern Ireland’s best, from McConnell’s Whiskey to Jawbox Gin, paired with a menu featuring fresh, seasonal ingredients. “When we decided to feature local brands, we wanted to showcase the high quality that Northern Ireland has to offer,” Kelvin said.

More than a bar, Kelvin envisions Seatons as a community hub. “One of the things that’s important to me is making sure that Seatons of Sailortown is a venue that contributes to the local community,” he shared.

“It’s about celebrating everything Belfast has to offer—from its history to its people.”
