Gin could be a tonic for hayfever woes

There’s good news for those suffering from the symptoms of hayfever… and it comes in a the shape of glass.

With pollen count rising, a new study has found that a refreshing G&T could help alleviate watery eyes, itchy throats and constant sneezing for millions of people.

Research conducted by Asthma UK suggests drinking clear spirits such as gin or vodka can reduce the symptoms, which tend to flare up most in May and June.

According to the charity, 75% of sufferers claim certain types of alcohol can trigger their allergies, which is due to histamine and sulphites typically found in darker, fermented drinks such as beer and red wine.

However, clear spirits including vodka and gin have a low histamine content, which is especially good for people who are prone to allergies.

No-one is suggesting that gin is a ‘cure all’  as far as allergies are concerned, but it could be worth switching your pint for a G&T the next time you’re at a barbecue or simply enjoying an al fresco drink.

Asthma UK points out that it is also better to only drink in moderation to ensure that keeping your allergies under check is all you need to worry about.
