Domino’s seeks 5,000 staff as furloughed workers leave

Domino’s Pizza is scrambling to hire 5,000 staff as furloughed workers head back to their old jobs.

During lockdown, hairdressers, barmen and taxi drivers took up jobs delivering and cooking pizzas but as restrictions ease many have returned to their old jobs

The pizza giant, which has 1,207 UK sites, is now trying to replace them ahead of an  expected boom during the European 2020 football championships.

In March 2020, the chain created 6,000 additional roles due to an increased need for delivery drivers during the first Covid lockdown.

Domino’s operations director Nicola Frampton said the group had been “overwhelmed” by the response of applicants last year, adding: .I’m proud we were able to play a part by offering people the opportunity to continue working and earning when times were tough.

‘Customer demand’

“But as people start to reunite, customer demand is showing no signs of slowing and so we’re now looking for 5,000 new recruits.”

As part of its recruitment drive, the business will also create 1,400 work placements as part of Kickstart, a Government initiative in England, Scotland and Wales.

The news comes after UK Hospitality said there was a shortfall of about 188,000 workers in the sector, with the shortage of front-of-house staff and chefs being “particularly acute”.

Uncertainty over the future stability of the industry and Brexit were cited as being the main reasons for the shortage.
