The busy night time location, home to Muriel’s Cafe Bar, Bootleggers and the Bullitt Hotel, is set to be transformed after the city council agreed to an application by One Belfast Business Improvement District.

It is hoped the move will have the same impact as the installation of a colourful light installation in Commercial Court.

That display of umbrellas, below, outside the The Duke of York was by commissioned by the bar’s director Willie Jack and instantly made the area one of the most Instagramable spots in Belfast.

Speaking at the time, Joanne Jack said: “This has been a long and very difficult year for many people but Belfast is a resilient city.

“We have weathered darker days than this and there is now very real hope that we have brighter days on the horizon – this message is at the heart of our new umbrella installation and I hope this strikes a chord with people as we all take cautiously optimistic steps forward.”

A council report said of the latest plan: “The site is located within the Belfast City Centre conservation area. Overall, the proposal would preserve the character and appearance of the area, including the conservation area, and would not be detrimental to the setting of nearby listed buildings, amenity of neighbouring properties or harmful to highway safety.

“The street is pedestrianised and therefore only used sporadically by some service vehicles. Given this, and the height of the lighting from street level, it is not anticipated that the proposal would block or impair views of any existing signage or cause any significant impact on road safety.”
