East Belfast restaurant changes hands as founder confirms closure

A long-established East Belfast restaurant is set to cease trading at the end of this month following its sale to a regional hospitality group, marking the end of a decade-long chapter for the business.

Cyprus Avenue, located in Ballyhackamore, confirmed it will close at the end of January 2026. The venue, situated along the Upper Newtownards Road, has been a well-known fixture in the area’s dining scene since opening in December 2016.

Named after the song by Van Morrison, the restaurant was founded by Richard McCracken and underwent a significant £750,000 refurbishment in 2018 as part of its growth strategy.

Over the years, the business has built a strong profile beyond foodservice alone. It has featured as a filming location for the The Lovers and hosted the programme’s premiere in 2023. The restaurant has also received national recognition through its inclusion in the Michelin Guide, which described it as “an appealing, all-day bistro”.

Confirming the closure in a statement shared on social media, Mr McCracken reflected on the restaurant’s tenure and its relationship with the local community.

He said:

“After 10 wonderful years, the time has come for CA to close its doors at the end of January 2026.

“It has been the honour of a lifetime to serve vibrant Ballyhackamore & a privilege to share so many memorable moments with you all over the past decade. From day one East Belfast has supported us with incredible loyalty, warmth & enthusiasm. For this we will be eternally grateful.

“Our heartfelt thanks go to our amazing team past & present — your hard work, passion & commitment are what made CA what it was.

“We couldn’t have done this without you.

“Finally, thank you to all our guests for your continued support in being part of CA. We’ve loved welcoming you through our doors & we will treasure the memories made here forever.

“Please come & bid us farewell this coming month, if you have any outstanding vouchers, please try to use them during January, or you’re very welcome to hold onto them for use in the new venue planned for spring 2026.

“Thank you east Belfast. Richard.”

The statement also confirmed that the business has been acquired by Balloo Inns, with plans in place to develop a new dining concept at the site.

Mr McCracken added:

“We’re also delighted to share that the restaurant has been sold on to our friends at Balloo Inns, who are great operators & have exciting plans to invest in a new dining venue.

“So watch this space — something truly special is coming. We wish them every success with their new venture.”

Balloo Inns, headquartered in Comber, operates a growing portfolio of hospitality venues across County Down, including Balloo House, Overwood restaurant, The Poacher’s Pocket and Parson’s Nose.

Further details on the new concept planned for the Ballyhackamore site are expected to be announced in the coming months.
