About Deerness Distillery

Stuart and Adelle Brown are the owners and founders of Deerness Distillery.

We’re situated in the beautiful Parish of Deerness on the east mainland of Orkney, an archipelago off the north-eastern coast of Scotland. Built on land near our family home, we designed and constructed the distillery ourselves with the help of family, friends and neighbours. It accommodates stills which distil gin and vodka, plus a forthcoming range of bespoke spirits and liqueurs.

Unique and handcrafted

Deerness Distillery’s quality products are truly unique and handcrafted. Our entire production process is carried out by hand, from the creation and distilling to bottling and labelling. We are proud that this ethos and our values are encompassed into our small, family-run business, ensuring we can operate in harmony with our surroundings in Deerness.

The handcrafted element extends to our deer logo, created and lino-cut by our designer, Caroline. This attention to detail has been carried through to the bottle labelling, with the designs being originally drawn and hand-cut.

Our logo was inspired by the red deer bones found on the Brough of Deerness, a 30 metre-high sea stack which is part of the Mull Head Nature Reserve a few miles from us. It’s thought that these bones gave the Parish its name, and that of the distillery.

Local and ethical

We also stock our own range of Deerness Distillery merchandise, which has been sourced and produced by local businesses. Its packaging uses items such as luxury recycled gift bags and ethical tissue paper. This is a testament to our commitment to the environment, and our much-valued ethos of supporting small local businesses similar to ourselves.

Thanks for taking time to read our story. We hope you enjoy sampling our products as much as we have making them.

Stuart and Adelle
