Sphinx named NI’s Best Kebab House

A Belfast takeaway has been named Best Kebab House in Northern Ireland at the British Kebab Awards in London.

The Sphinx Restaurant chain celebrated its second accolade in under a week having won the Kebab of the Year Award 2022 for their Stranmillis restaurant at the YesChef Takeaway Awards in Athlone on February 22.

Now, its Botanic Avenue branch has come away with the title of Best Kebab House in Northern Ireland, adding to a long list of gongs it has won over the years.

The Sphinx, which opened in 1980, is believed to be the only kebab shop in the UK & Ireland with an in-house butcher who uses locally sourced lean beef which is marinated for up to 72 hours.

Speaking after winning the award, owner Errol Jenkins, above, said: “We’re delighted with this. We always try to make our kebabs to a certain standard.

“We’re putting out quality food all the time, and we’ve been doing it since 1980. If you go back to the ingredients, we use local beef, and it’s 28 days matured. It’s not processed meat you’re getting. We have a butcher in, we marinate the beef, it’s all done by hand. So I think that’s resonated with people.”

The business has recently begun operating a delivery service. Find out more about Sphinx Kebabs on their website.
