Regeneration scheme will transform Bangor seafront

Bangor seafront is to be transformed following news that planners have approved a major redevelopment scheme.

Permission was granted towards the end of last month for a number of new developments in the neglected Queen’s Parade area of the town. These will include new restaurants and cafes, a flexible theatre and performance space, new business units and 72 new apartments.

Also, part of Marine Gardens which is currently being used for car parking is to be made into a landscaped courtyard complete with play equipment for children, a bandstand and covered walkways.

The recommendation to endorse the planners’ decision to approve the scheme was one of the final acts of North Down Borough Council’s planning committee before the new Ards and North Down Borough Council took over.

Turley, the Belfast-based planning and urban design consultancy, will be the lead team on the transformation project.

The Mayor of North Down, Peter Martin, added: “This project is a marvellous example of a collaborative working project involved DSD, the council and the community and I wish to commend all those involved on their achievements to date.

“The development of Queen’s Parade will complement the existing regeneration work in the town and inject new life into Bangor seafront.”
