Remembering John D. Toner: A hospitality icon

John D. Toner, a respected hotelier and a prominent figure in Ireland’s hospitality sector, passed away on January 11, 2025, at the age of 76.

Born on August 25, 1948, John resided at Marguerite Avenue, Newcastle, and leaves behind a lasting legacy in the industry he dedicated his life to.

John’s extensive career was closely tied to the Hastings Hotel Group, where he served as General Manager at notable establishments, including the Europa Hotel in Belfast and the Slieve Donard Resort and Spa in Newcastle, County Down. His leadership during challenging times, particularly at the Europa during the Troubles, was a testament to his resilience and professionalism.

A two-term President of the Irish Hospitality Institute starting in 1999, John played a pivotal role in advancing professional standards within the sector. Despite his recent health challenges, he remained active in the institute until travel became difficult over the past year.

In 2024, John published his memoir, A Job Well Done, co-authored with journalist Petesy Burns. The book provides a detailed account of his personal journey and career milestones, reflecting on his life during the Troubles, his school years, and his experiences managing some of Ireland’s most renowned hotels. Filled with humor and insight, the memoir stands as a record of both the man and the era he helped shape.

John is survived by his wife, Cathy; his five children—Paul, Ciara, Gareth, Claire, and Matthew—and nine grandchildren: Fionn, Keelan, Dylan, Kaden, Callum, Grace, Quinn, Rossa, and Lugh. He is also remembered fondly by his sons-in-law Stephen and Maurice, daughters-in-law Rebecca, Coleen, and Allie, and his siblings Anne, Pat, and Charles, as well as his extended family and friends. His sister Dorothy predeceased him.

John was deeply involved in his local parish community and was known for his kindness and generosity, which extended beyond his professional achievements.

John D. Toner will be remembered as a dedicated professional, a mentor to many, and a family man who enriched the lives of those around him. His contributions to the hospitality industry and his community will endure as a lasting testament to a life well lived.
