NI entrepreneurs to expand stunning Regency development

The team behind the restoration of two 19th century buildings in Belfast’s Upper Crescent are to expand the project.

Cecil Hetherington, Anthony Kieran and wife, Andrea last year transformed two properties into The Regency, which was recently granted five-star status by Tourism Northern Ireland.

The team have now confirmed the purchase of two more Upper Crescent properties under phase two of their restoration plans.

Mr Kieran and Mr Hetherington, who founded Used Cars NI together in 2006, said the plans for numbers 14 and 15 similarly involves transforming the 19th century houses into luxury tourist accommodation.

“We’re honoured and very excited to be in the position of breathing new life into another of these magnificent townhouses,” said Mr Kieran.

“The Regency phase one taught us a lot and we’re driven by a passion for respectfully restoring these buildings, all while revering and protecting the built heritage of a time gone by.

“Once a highly desired address, Upper Crescent, off University Road in the south of the city, boasts an elegantly curving row of three-storey dwellings in a late regency style, facing out onto a small park in the centre.

“Built in 1846 by the timber merchant Robert Corry, it has also been suggested that the celebrated Belfast architect Sir Charles Lanyon may have been involved in the design of the crescents.

“The Crescents are a unique part of the city’s history and many locals have shared their stories with us of living and working the buildings. It was heart breaking to watch these incredible sites fall into disrepair and we are thrilled that we can continue on this journey following the success of The Regency ‘s restoration back in 2021.”

In December 2021 LCN reported on how one of south Belfast’s most iconic buildings has been transformed into an 8,000 sq ft hospitality venue thanks to a £2.5 million restoration project.

The Regency offers luxury accommodation in the city and currently comprises six bespoke one-bed and two-bed luxury private residences, complete with a communal garden and two private courtyards.
