Belfast to get its own Ivy restaurant

One the best know names in the world of food is coming to Belfast.

The Ivy Collection, which owns the famous Covent Garden restaurant which bears its name and 36 other venues across the UK, has been granted planning permission for a two-storey restaurant in Cleaver House.

Occupying the site of the recently vacated Burger King, which is now moving to Victoria Square, the Belfast Ivy will represent the company’s second venture on the island  of Ireland following the opening of its Dawson Street venue in July 2018.

The Belfast Telegraph revealed plans for what was Burger King and an adjoining unit, including re-instating timber shopfronts with full height glazing and the installation of a polished granite plinth to match the original ones of  neighbouring units.

The original Ivy was opened by Abel Giandolini in 1917 and over the years became a hugely popular celebrity hangout due to its proximity to the West End.

Laurence Olivier, Noel Coward, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman were all fans and table which had hosted both Princess Diana and Margaret Thatcher was even auctioned off  in 2015.

n 2005 ,fashion and property mogul Richard Caring bought The Ivy and the Caprice Holdings group (which owns the famous Le Caprice restaurant in London) and quickly set about opening new venues bearing the famous name.

Cleaver House, once home to the famous Robinson & Cleaver department store, was built in 1888 and boasts the same kind of architectural appeal that typifies so many of the restaurants that bear the Ivy name.
