Bangor’s Salty Dog hotel to get new owners

Bangor hotel and restaurant The Salty Dog is to be taken over by new owners.

Glasgow-born businessman Ken Sharp, above, who bought the business in 2012, announced the news  on social media but didn’t reveal why he was leaving.

A post on the hotel’s Facebook page read: “The Sharp family are sad to say that they are leaving The Salty Dog Hotel & Bistro. It has been an amazing 12 years looking after this 127-year-old building and working with some incredible people on The Salty Dog Team, our local suppliers, other great local businesses and of course our amazing customers. All of whom have taught us way more than we would have thought at the start of this journey.

“We are pleased to be handing it over to the Fusco family to add to their other businesses in Bangor and look forward to seeing what unique stamp they can bring to Bangor’s only seafront hotel.”
Ken, who  once worked for the royal family at Buckingham Palace before moving to Northern Ireland over 15 years ago, is also an an ambassador for The Burnt Chef Project which aims to help those in the industry who may be struggling with their  mental health and Ken previously opened up to LCN about his own battle.

“My own doctor diagnosed me with depression and anxiety when the second lockdown came,” he explained.

“He started asking me about various physical problems and told me there was something more. He said, ‘it is not surprising you have been through so much and something has just gone’.

“I compare it to when I dislocated my shoulder a couple of years before I stopped playing rugby. I had to take some drugs and be aware of it and realise it could come back.

“The problem was I did not get the counselling because you cannot access counselling fast enough. I finally managed to sort it on my own with a lady who set up her own practice after leaving the health service.”

No further information about when the transfer will take place or why the Sharp family are departing was available.
