Ground has been broken at the site of the former Ebrington Barracks in Derry as work begins on a new four-star hotel.

The Stormont Executive has backed a £15m investment in the 152-bed facility and work will see the existing clocktower refurbished along with five other buildings on the former military base.

In total £7m of funding will come from the Executive office’s investment fund and another £2m from Invest NI.

Speaking at the site, First Minister Paul Givan said it was “another step forward” for Ebrington and the city.

“It continues to grow as a vibrant, modern city which is looking to the future with confidence – and there is a real sense of that optimism here today,” he added

“As today’s ideas become tomorrow’s opportunities, I will be watching with interest as potential turns into reality for Londonderry.”

Deputy First Minister Michelle O’Neill said: “Together with the Grade A office space due to be completed soon, this new hotel will bring a renewed sense of vibrancy and a real boost to the regional economy.

“I offer my congratulations to the developers and all who have played a part in getting us to this point.

“The commencement of construction on the Ebrington Hotel is a milestone day for Derry. This major investment will create jobs both during the construction phase, and after the hotel has opened.”

Hotel Developer Cecil Doherty said: “Our objective is to create and develop a 4 star Hotel to cater for the ever increasing popularity of our City as a must visit, exciting tourist destination.

“We are excited for its future specifically and the Ebrington site overall with our creation of 120 jobs locally along with the unique opportunity to repurpose and revitalise iconic historically significant buildings. Ebrington’s future is very bright.”

Plans for the hotel were unveiled in 2017 and Derry City and Strabane District Council approved them in 2018.

Work is expected to be completed on the hotel in the summer of 2023.

The manager of Belfast’s five-star Fitzwilliam Hotel has warned “it could still take two to three years for hospitality to regain its former strength”, but hailed the impact of staycations in saving 2021.

Cian Landers, who took the helm at the landmark property in 2012, told LCN: “Tourism has been severely impacted by the Covid-19 crisis, but I am confident that we can and will eventually recover.

“While travel restrictions are beginning to ease in parts of the world, it could still take two to three years for hospitality to regain its former strength. I really look forward to that.”

Cian, who has seen The Fitzwilliam awarded five-star accreditation by Tourism NI in 2017 and win the AA Hotel of the Year Award for Northern Ireland 2019 – 2020, told LCN the remainder of this year looks positive in terms of sustainable trade “which has continued to come from our local leisure markets”.

He added: “We continually review our target audience, and we know who is staying with us and where they have come from.

“The domestic market represents our best prospect in the short-term future, so it makes commercial sense for us to focus on these markets over the coming months.”

‘A variable career option’

Meath native Cian, who started his hospitality career as a chef, also warned that the industry needed to react to how the twin challenges of Covid and Brexit have helped create a recruitment crisis.

“The combination of both has depleted the labour pool and caused shortages across all areas of the business,” he told LCN.

“In terms of attracting new people, I think from the very early stages we need to put hospitality in front of people as a long-term career option, not just a temporary job (while studying or travelling).

“By showcasing all the different areas you can work and move around in within hospitality, we may also help people to see it as an exciting and variable career option.

“It’s no secret that working in hospitality is hard work with long hours, but we need to show all the opportunities and stepping stones that are available.

“It is also so important to provide a positive and supportive working environment and ensure that people have the right support, guidance, and on-going training and development.

Up to 500 new jobs could be on the way to Newtownabbey after the local borough council gave its approval for a £13m office and hotel complex near the Valley Leisure Centre.

The new hotel, which is bring proposed by developer Alan Wilton’s firm, Comtec Developments, will span three storeys and includes a ground floor café, bar and restaurant for residents within the lobby area.

A total of 4,692 signatures were collected on a petition opposing the hotel and office development. Signatories said they were concerned on a number of fronts, including the inclusion of a cinema – which has since been removed from the plans – as well as fears around road safety and traffic congestion.

Mr Wilton has said that up to 200 people could be employed in the construction phase of the project and that there will be around 280 permanent jobs once the complex is completed. He also told Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council that the property would garner them around £230,000 in rates per annum.
