The price of a pint of Heineken in Northern Ireland could be about to go up after the brewer told publicans in the Republic it was putting up the price of kegs.

Heineken told pubs over the border it was increasing the price of certain draught kegs by the equivalent of 17 cents per pint, with the expectation that the price of a pint of selected products will likely limb by around 25 cents.

Craigavon’s United Wines, which distributes beers owned by the firm and Orchard Thieves cider, was unable to say whether the Dutch company was passing on the same price increases in Northern Ireland.

It said: “We are reviewing our costs in the Northern Ireland market and are not in a position to comment at this time.”

The increase will come into effect in the Republic on December 1 with Coors Light, Birra Moretti, Beamish, Foster’s, Murphy’s, Appleman’s and other brands also being hit.

A 50-litre keg of Heineken will cost pubs €185, up from €169 this month a 9.4% increase before Vat is added.

Kavanagh’s Pub in the Liberties area of Dublin said many people would “get used to drinking a different lager”.

“We would need to increase the [price of a] pint by 35 cents. When do we take a stand against this madness?” it asked online.

Heineken, which employs more than 400 people in Ireland, recently increased UK prices by 6%, citing higher costs.

“Businesses in Ireland continue to face exceptional inflationary pressures, and our industry is no different,” the firm said in a letter to Irish publicans.

“Like you, Heineken is faced with unprecedented cost increases across the supply chain.

“This increase is essential for us to offset, in part, the severe input cost pressure.”

Popular North London craft brewer Beavertown has sold the remaining 51% stake of its business to Heineken

The maker of Gamma Ray and Neck Oil had already sold a 49% stake of its business to Heineken back in June 2018 for £40million but no figure was put on the sale price of the final batch of shares.

Following the 2018 deal with Heineken, Beavertown  built a new brewery in Tottenham Hale called Beaverworld .

Last summer, Beavertown Brewery announced plans for the launch of its first ever pub, Corner Pin, situated in the heart of the brewery’s hometown in Tottenham, north London.

The brewer also formerly struck a deal with Tottenham Hotspur to open a microbrewery and taproom at the stadium, which both parties claimed was a “premier League first.”

Its founder, Logan Plant, says the beer was first developed in a restaurant’s basement kitchen and has previously spoken out about the importance of maintaining the company’s independence.

Sources said that the sale will see Plant depart the beer scene keeping a title of “consultant”.

In an interview at the time of the first sale of shares Mr Plant, son of rock legend Robert Plant, responded no to the question ‘are you selling up and selling out?’

“It’s a minority deal”, he said. “This whole process has been about me staying in full control of our journey with our team continuing to man the charge and take us forward in to the future together like never before.”

Heineken, the world’s second largest brewer, is to increase the price of its beers due to the impact of inflation.

The firm, whose brands include Strongbow cider, Amstel and Heineken larger, said the move was unavoidable.

Chief executive Dolf van den Brink said: “These kind of price increases and inflation, I think we have not seen in a generation.”

The move comes after  after the founder of Cobra beer also said its prices will rise because of “vicious” cost pressures.

Lord Karan Bilimoria told BBC 5 Live: “Virtually every business in every sector’ is having to contend with inflation, interest rate rises and tax increases.

“Our input costs in every way – bottling, energy – are up. Freight costs have soared, sometimes ten-times. Wages are increasing and on top of that there are labour shortages.

“It does mean that businesses have to put up prices. But the consumer is already feeling the squeeze. It is a really challenging situation for everyone.”

Neither firm has said how much their prices will go up by.

Inflation in the UK hit a new 30-year high in January as energy prices, fuel and food costs continued to rise. The cost of living is now rising faster than wages and is expected to climb above 7% this year.

Marmite-maker Unilever, the bakers Greggs and sandwich chain Pret a Manger have all warned on price rises as their costs rises.

Heineken said its input costs were now set to rise by a mid-teens percentage due to the price of barley doubling compared to a year ago and aluminium prices going up by around 50%.

Transport and energy costs have also risen for the business.

Orchard Thieves® Cider offers a winter warmer of delicious mulled cider while a complimentary Heineken 0.0® is available to designated drivers when they present their car keys at the bar, ensuring they aren’t left out of the celebrations at this key time.

Crafted from the perfect mix of crisp and tart apples, Orchard Thieves® offers an instant, fresh apple taste and this Christmas, on-trade businesses are excited to offer a warming winter serve of this popular product. Warm, sweet and spiced, this drink is garnished with a squeeze of orange and a clove-studded orange slice. Orchard Thieves® cider is mulled in a selected number of on-trade accounts within an eye-catching urn and served from branded cups.

Heineken 0.0®, Heineken’s first non-alcoholic addition to its portfolio, is twice-brewed and fermented from natural ingredients, with gentle alcohol removal and blending, to achieve a fruity flavour and slight malty notes. This non-alcoholic beer echos Heineken’s focus on quality and premium taste and has been received extremely well across Europe, reviving the non-alcoholic category.
