A new Belfast city centre restaurant, which started as a pop-up concept aiming to provide a unique dining experience, has opened its doors following a £200,000 investment and the creation of 12 new jobs.

Roam, which is located in Callendar Street, is owned by self-taught Belfast chef, Ryan Jenkins (29), who has built a strong reputation in recent years for his culinary expertise.

Diners can look forward to innovative, seasonal menus made using the finest local ingredients served in a fun and relaxed atmosphere with Roam’s signature playlists for entertainment.

Ryan Jenkins said: “Roam started off in 2018 as a pop-up restaurant in venues across Northern Ireland and during the pandemic, we kept the momentum going with our fine-dining boxes which were a huge hit. Since then, I have been working hard behind the scenes and I’m delighted to be opening the doors to Roam’s very own home in the heart of Belfast.”

Starters include Char Siu Iberico Pork, Bok Choy; and Rare Beef, Yolk, Burnt Onion, Chive mains include Flat Iron, Grilled Greens, Miso Onion, Beef Sauce; and Hake, Squash, Black Kale, Café De Paris and desserts include Strawberry, Vanilla, Rose, Basil; and Chocolate, Coffee, Caramelised Milk Ice Cream.

“From our inception, Roam’s menus have always focused on the very best, local ingredients. So whilst diners know the type of dish they are ordering, they won’t know what the meal consists of until they are served it. It’s a new and unique experience that we are offering and I am confident that it will not only appeal to our loyal clientele, but to a completely new customer base in our city centre location,” Ryan said.

“I have built a brilliant team of chefs and front of house over the last four years. They have been with me from the beginning and have all helped play an important part in getting Roam to where it is today, so I am delighted to be able to give them full-time employment in a restaurant they are just as passionate about as I am.”

Bushmills Irish Whiskey is bringing back its Black Bush Stories for 2022 with an exciting first collaboration to mark International Irish Whiskey Day on the 3rd of March.

A virtual masterclass with Belfast coffee trailblazers, Established Coffee will give will give attendees from Derry to Kerry and Galway to Dublin the chance to immersive themselves in an evening of whiskey, coffee and cocktails from the comfort of their homes, with expert guidance along the way.

The long running Black Bush Stories series celebrates the synergies of craft between Bushmills and other local Irish business across the island while providing an opportunity for guests to discover a new interest or skill.

Commenting on the latest collaboration, Mark Ashbridge founder of Established Coffee, which boasts and its own roastery in the heart of Belfast, said: “There’s a clear connection in the work we do as roasters and what Bushmills do as distillers. That pursuit of perfection. It’s what made this collaboration with Bushmills very appealing to us.

‘Learn and evolve’

“At Established we’re always pushing ourselves to innovate, learn and evolve so it was an exciting challenge to create a Bushmills coffee blend from their Olorosso Sherry Cask and Bourbon Barrels.

In partnership with Bushmills, Mark has also created an exclusive coffee blend using beans that have been finished in bourbon and sherry barrels from the Old Bushmills Distillery to create a blend with the rich and fruity notes so familiar with Black Bush

The event, hosted by Bushmills brand ambassador Lauren McMullan, will take participants on a journey of discovery, delving into the world of maturation as Mark reveals the unique process – and learning curve – for creating the special Black Bush Blend, while master mixologist Chris Pawar will host an interactive cocktail masterclass.

The first Bushmills Black Bush x Established Coffee event will take place virtually at 7pm on Thursday the 3rd of March 2022. Tickets cost £9/ €10 and include an event kit worth £40 / €45 with the tools

A new branch of Costa Coffee is set to open its doors at Sprucefield after Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council granted planning permission for a drive-thru branch at the site of the former Frankie and Benny’s restaurant.

The Restaurant Group closed the eatery alongside the M1 during the first Covid-19 lockdown, but confirmed in August 2020 that it would not reopen as part of a cull of some 90 group outlets.

MBCC Foods (Ireland), which operates the Costa franchise on the island of Ireland, lodged a planning application for a drive-thru coffee shop just two months later in October 2020, with panning approval granted on February 4.

Industry monitor Construction Information Services Ireland has estimated the value of the project at around £786,000.

The new drive-thru will take the total number number of Costas in Northern Ireland to 22 with new stores having recently opened at Kennedy Centre, Belfast, Lisburn Leisure Plex and Hollywood Exchange.

Costa Coffee, through its franchise partnership with MBCC Foods Ireland Ltd, opened their first store in Northern Ireland in 2004 at Belfast City Airport and the company now employs more than 250 people here.

Starbucks is set to open three new outlets bringing the total number in Northern Ireland to 26.

The new stores will be based in Belfast, Derry and Newtownards and the US chain is already recruiting for what will be its third outlet in Derry, on the Strand Road thoroughfare.

Later this year it will add two new drive-thru outlets in North Down and North Belfast, with planning approval granted for a unit at the revamped Hillview Retail Park on Belfast’s Crumlin Road.

Ciaran and Colm Butler, who hold the island of Ireland franchise for the Seattle-based coffee giant, sought approval for the facility at Hillview, where Lidl are anchor tenants/

The application was submitted by Raspet Limited, whose address is unit 5 of the Connswater Shopping Centre, the unit which is home to Starbucks at the east Belfast retail complex.

Industry monitor Construction Information Services Ireland estimates the Hillview development will represent an investment of around £500,000.

Hillview Retail Park is owned by Killultagh Estates, which also owns both the Connswater Shopping Centre and the Castlebawn Shopping Centre in Newtownards.

Planning officials in Ards and North Down are currently considering another separate planning application from Raspet Limited for a new drive-thru just south-west of the Castlebawn complex.
