KFC has said that by 2030 a third of all its new hires in the UK will be young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The chain, which has around 950 UK outlets, predicts the move will help about 6,000 people get their first job, at a time when the hospitality industry is grappling with staff shortages.

The programme, developed with the charity UK Youth, will involve training and practical work experience and is targeted at people aged between 16 and 24 who have faced barriers to employment because of social, economic, domestic or mental health challenges.

Meghan Farren, general manager of KFC UK and Ireland, said: “If we’re to tackle the labour shortage and provide better jobs and economic growth across the country for the next generation, then we urgently need to help young people who have been excluded from education and training opportunities to find their feet and their voice in the workplace.”

She added that a pledge like this, to support younger people, was “an investment in the future of our businesses”.

The announcement comes as a number of industries are battling staff shortages, with hospitality firms such as pubs, bars and restaurants among those hardest hit.

Last month, a survey by the CBI business lobby group found nearly three-quarters of UK companies had suffered from labour shortages in the past 12 months.

Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, McDonald’s and Starbucks have all suspended business in Russia in response to Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

PepsiCo CEO Ramon Laguarta said: “Given the horrific events occurring in Ukraine we are announcing the suspension of the sale of Pepsi-Cola, and our global beverage brands in Russia, including 7Up and Mirinda.

“We will also be suspending capital investments and all advertising and promotional activities in Russia.

“We have a responsibility to continue to offer our other products in Russia, including daily essentials such as milk and other dairy offerings, baby formula and baby food.”

Rival drinks firm Coca-Cola is also  temporarily halting business in Russia, with a statement saying : “Our hearts are with the people who are enduring unconscionable effects from these tragic events in Ukraine.

“We will continue to monitor and assess the situation as circumstances evolve.”

It comes after Starbucks announced it was  closing its 130 Starbucks shops in Russia indefinitely.

The coffee chain’s 2,000 employees in Russia will still be paid, he said.

McDonald’s is also to close its 850 restaurants in Russia, with CEO Chris Kempckinski saying the fast food giant could not ignore the “needless human suffering in Ukraine”.

Calls have been mounting for a boycott of companies that continue to do business in Russia, with Burger King and KFC yet to suspend operations.

A number of other companies have ceased operations in Russia as a result of Mr Putin’s actions.

Apple, Microsoft and a number of car manufacturers such as Ford and General Motors are just some of the corporations that have ceased trading there.

A £5m investment by fast-food chain KFC at Glengormley will see the creation of a giant new restaurant there and 120 new jobs.

The new venue on the Antrim Road, which replaces the existing outlet after 36 years, will have the latest touch-screen ordering technology and an 80-seater restaurant.

A significant amount is also being invested by the Herbert Group – the UK’s biggest franchisee for KFC – so that home delivery can be offered in all restaurants from next year.

A spokesman for the Herbert Group said that this was ‘an exciting time’ as it invested in expansion in GB and among its head office team in south Belfast.

The old KFC restaurant at Glengormley will stay open until the new venue is ready to trade next year.
