Increasing global demand for Irish whiskey is to be met by a state-of-the-art new €250m distillery in Midleton, Co Cork.

The new distillery will be built on a 55-acre site adjacent to its existing facility in the town, will employ 100 people and will be fully operational by 2025.

Last week, Irish Distillers announced financial results revealing that, for the first time, its Jameson whiskey had sold more than 10 million cases worldwide in the financial year to the end of June.

Jameson is now the fastest-growing Irish whiskey in the world.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin unveiled the project which he said was of enormous economic and tourism benefit for Cork and Ireland.

“The continued success of the Irish whiskey industry is something that we can be incredibly proud of as a nation,” he said.

“Irish Distillers has played an integral role in the development of the industry. Whiskey has been distilled in Midleton for nearly 200 years, and the €250m investment will deliver hundreds of more jobs into the future, both during construction and once the distillery is operational.”

“Today’s announcement is an extremely positive development for Midleton and the wider region, and will further solidify Midleton’s reputation as the home of Irish whiskey.”

Irish Distillers chief executive Nodjame Fouad said: “At Irish Distillers we are always planning for the future growth of Irish whiskey and today is a momentous day for Irish Distillers and the team at Midleton Distillery as we announce a €250m investment plan to deliver a new, state of the art distillery which will be a carbon neutral operation.

“We are immensely proud of the continued strong performance of our full portfolio of Irish whiskeys, led by Jameson which sold over 10 million cases in our 2022 financial year.

“The new distillery will be a beautiful, landmark development with sustainability at its core and will serve to further demonstrate our commitment to Midleton and east Cork, generating more jobs for the region and further driving recognition of Midleton Distillery as the beating heart of Irish whiskey.”

Jameson sold 8.6 million cases in 2020/2021, up from 7.5 million in the previous year, it has been revealed.

In the US, four million vases of Jameson were sold, up 19%, while sales of Jameson Black Barrel increased by 36% in the US in the same period.

Other key market saw similar success with UK sales up 10%, Germany by 30% and Australia by 15%. However, biggest growth came in emerging markets, with sales in Nigeria up 216%, India 85%  and China by 45%.

Conor McQuaid, chairman and CEO of parent company Irish Distillers, hailed the brand’s “incredible” resilience during a pandemic.

He said: “This was achieved despite the disruption to the hospitality sector in many markets throughout our financial year, coupled with increasing input costs.

‘Premiumisation strategy’

“We are confident that our clear, long-term vision and consistent approach will serve to support Jameson’s continued growth in the future, despite any potential uncertainly or other challenges to our business which may arise in the short term.

“Additionally, the global growth of our prestige portfolio comprising Redbreast, the Spot whiskeys, Midleton Very Rare and Method and Madness reflects the increase in consumer appetite for premium and super-premium Irish whiskeys which we will continue to nurture as part of our premiumisation strategy.”

While noting that travel restrictions during the year had impacted the group’s  Global Travel Retail, Mr McDaid said he was “confident” of a return to pre-pandemic levels at some stage.

He added:  “We also appreciate that it continues to be a challenging business environment for the hospitality sector and particularly the on-trade. We will continue to work with and support our partners across Ireland and other global markets as they look towards a full re-opening.”

That classic combination of Irish whiskey and coffee is enjoying an ice cool revival in the form of Jameson Cold Brew.

A first-of-its-kind tipple that infuses the world’s favourite Irish whiskey with natural cold brew coffee. Produced in Ireland, Jameson Cold Brew marries triple distilled Jameson Irish Whiskey with natural cold brew coffee derived from 100 per cent Arabica beans from Brazil and Colombia. The result is a smooth and distinctive beverage with intense coffee aromatics, complemented by the vanilla nuttiness of Jameson, with notes of toasted oak and dark chocolate.

A refreshingly versatile brew, this unique whiskey can be enjoyed over ice, with tonic or cola, or in a Jameson Cold Brew-tini for a sophisticated take on the well-known Espresso Martini.

Set to appeal to whiskey lovers and coffee connoisseurs alike, Jameson Cold Brew is building on the incredible renaissance Irish whiskey is enjoying and tapping into Ireland’s craft coffee culture.

Dave Quinn, Head of Whiskey Science at Irish Distillers explains: “While coffee and Irish whiskey are no strangers in the glass, we wanted to modernise this iconic duo in a refreshing way which will appeal to curious whiskey drinkers and coffee aficionados looking for new flavours and experiences.

“We tested the concept with Irish and Australian consumers in summer 2018 and released the expression as a limited edition in the US in January this year. Following rave reviews, we’re delighted to welcome Jameson Cold Brew as a permanent member of the Jameson family!”

Bottled at 30% ABV, Jameson Cold Brew is now available in retailers across Northern Ireland.
