Bakery chain Greggs has moved one step closer to opening its first drive-thru in Northern Ireland after a planning application for a new branch in Co Armagh was recommended for approval.

Last week, officers from Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon (ABC) Borough Council’s planning department gave the green light to the fast food outlet’s proposal to open the restaurant at Craigavon’s Marlborough Retail Park.

However, no formal decision notice has been issued yet and the planning application is listed as “under consideration” on the NI Planning Portal.

Greggs has almost 2,500 outlets across the UK and is famous for its sausage rolls. It currently has 17 stores in Northern Ireland.

The Newcastle upon Tyne-based chain also offers coffee, pasties, freshly made sandwiches and much more.

According to the planning application for the drive-thru in Craigavon, which was submitted in January, it will be located next to existing Burger King and will have an outdoor seating area.

According to supporting statements submitted on behalf of Turkington Properties, the size of the unit will be around 185 sq m.

The Greggs store will have 31 seats inside and 29 car parking spaces, including two disabled spots.

The supporting statement added that the Craigavon retail park has undergone “significant redevelopment and investment” in recent years.

Marlborough Retail Park also has a drive-thru Starbucks store, M&S Simply Food, Home Bargains, O’Neill’s and Airtastic. Rushmere Shopping Centre, Tesco Extra and Halfords are all located next to the site.

Plans were also approved last year to build two new units and a gym at the retail park.

Last year, Greggs unveiled expansion plans, which included trialling a new 24-hour drive-thru, following a record high for sales.

At the time the chain did not confirm if its expansion plans would extend to Northern Ireland.

Last year it revealed that total sales hit a record high of £1.5bn in 2022, up by nearly a quarter on the previous year.

A Vietnamese restaurateur is bringing the Southeast Asian country’s coffee tradition to a new store in south Belfast.

William Chan  has opened the first branch of Phin on Ormeau Road after selling Madame Pho, the Vietnamese restaurant he founded in 2020.

Phin, named after a tool used in coffee brewing in Vietnam, has opened at a unit previously occupied by coffee shop chain District.

Mr Chan said he had a “passion” for hospitality after growing up in the trade, with his family owning Furama, a Chinese restaurant in Antrim for over 30 years.

He added: “I previously had a Vietnamese restaurant in Belfast, Madame Pho, as well, and it was always our plan to open a standalone coffee business.

“Coffee culture is actually really big in Vietnam so we wanted to bring quite an authentic experience to Belfast and really just educate people on Vietnamese coffee.

“It’s actually the second-largest grower of coffee in the world and I don’t think a lot of people are educated on that.

“It uses a Robusta bean which in a lot of places is used as a filler bean to mix in with premium Arabica, but we’re trying to use it as a premium blend, which is what they do in Vietnam.”

On the possibility of more venues, he said: “We’re just trying to get this set up first but we do have plans to open a few more. We would love to be able to bring this to different areas of Belfast. That’s definitely in our plans.

“We’ll be doing the Vietnamese banh mi sandwiches, sort of like Vietnamese baguettes, just to really complement the authenticity of what we’re trying to do.”

Phin isn’t the first Vietnamese coffee shop here. Brothers Gary and Martin Small opened the first Vietnamese coffee shop on the island of Ireland in Belfast’s Great Victoria Street in 2017, though the unit closed down during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Gary said it had since become a major supplier in the UK, supplying many Vietnamese coffee shops and restaurants.

A popular Lisburn bar is to reopen more than a vear after its owners announced they would be “retiring” the location.

The Speckled Hen, on the Derriaghy Road, closed in January 2023 after eight years and thanked its loyal customers for the patronage. However in a surprise post earlier this year, it hinted at a comeback – which has now been confirmed.

In a new post on social media, the eatery’s owner Martin said the bar will reopen from next month and will be considering third-party applications for its catering service.

“Hi, just to confirm the Speckled Hen will re open for drinks during May and food from mid June,” the post reads.

“The world of hospitality has changed dramatically in the last three years. The Speckled Hen going forward will reflect the changes while retaining a welcoming, comfortable and save environment for all.

“We are considering letting the food element of the business out to a third party. The terms will be very reasonable.”

Shortly before closing its doors last year, the pub’s management would frequently post on social media about the high bills it was experiencing, including over £9,000 a month in electricity.

In 2022, The Speckled Hen was named as one of the winners at the National Pub & Bar Awards.

The bar is now on the lookout for local musicians to entertain punters upon reopening.

“Going forward we are looking for local musicians in particular traditional music. We are also looking for a talented local pianist,” its post added.

“If you know anyone please share this message. Regards to all and we look forward to seeing you in the not to distant future. Martin”

The Lisburn spot, with origins dating back to the 1600s, became popular for its classic bar style and menu showcasing local produce.

The Northern Ireland Hotels Federation has partnered with the Food Standards Agency to launch a ‘Choice for Children’ initiative after new research into children’s menu offerings in restaurants revealed a concerning lack of variety and healthy options.

Discussing the ‘Choice for Children’ initiative Eddie McKeever, President of the NIHF, said: “The family market is vital for hotels, especially for events like birthday parties and special occasions. Children are a key audience, and we are eager to introduce more appealing food options for them. The NIHF is keen to explore the opportunities for offering healthier options for children and to promote fresh, interesting food choices for young people.

“As part of our commitment to changing consumer needs and in response to the FSA’s findings, we are launching an initiative called ‘Choice for Children’.  Hotel restaurants will be given the opportunity to create a dish which will not only appeal to children but also offer an interesting alternative to the current children’s menu staples.

“The new dishes must meet certain healthier criteria. Shortlisted dishes will be promoted via social media and the public will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite. We are looking forward to seeing some delicious dishes on the menu.”

The dishes created by restaurants must comply with the following criteria:

  • Include at least one portion of vegetables/fruit.
  • Should not be deep fried.
  • Have no added salt.
  • Offer an alternative to chips such as boiled potatoes, rice, pasta, noodles or bread.
  • Be appropriately sized for a child.
  • Include ingredients that are higher in fibre and contain less salt, sugar and saturated fat.

Jennifer McGonagle, Senior Nutrition Policy Advisor at the FSA, welcomed the industry’s commitment to promoting diverse and nutritious children’s menus. Jennifer added:

“We know from our recent ‘What’s on the Children’s Menu’ research, conducted along with local councils, that 70% of businesses surveyed agreed the hospitality sector has a role in improving children’s diets.  The launch of the ‘Choice for Children’ initiative amongst hotel restaurants demonstrates the commitment to developing diverse nutritious menu options for children, which is extremely encouraging.  We’re really looking forward to seeing the innovative menu options created and how these are received by consumers.”

To find out more please visit nihf.co.uk and submit applications by Friday 10th May 2024.

To join the conversation and support this initiative, use the hashtag #ChoiceForChildren on social media to raise awareness.

Hospitality Ulster has warned restaurants to be vigilant of a bank transfer scam after one venue was scammed out of £300.

In a post on social media, the trade group said it had been contacted by an unnamed business that shared an encounter where three men ran up a large bill and later claimed they didn’t have cash or cards to settle the bill, instead asking if they could pay via bank transfer.

“One of the party showed the staff a text message allegedly from his bank, confirming that the funds had been transferred to the restaurant. He said that it could take an hour or more for the transfer to show in the recipient’s account, so the party would wait and have more drinks,” read the post from Hospitality Ulster.

“The restaurant owners grew suspicious and informed the party that they had contacted the PSNI, at which point they left the establishment. Police attended the restaurant and informed ownership that they were aware of this scam.

“Please remain vigilant to situations like this, or similar, where you are unable to confirm that payment has been made.”

The warning of the scam comes at a particularly difficult time for hospitality venues. In February, it was revealed a quarter of hospitality businesses have no cash reserves and a further 29% have less than three month’s worth, according to a survey covering the whole of the UK.

The joint survey by the British Beer and Pub Association, British Institute of Innkeeping, UKHospitality alongside Hospitality Ulster showed the overwhelming majority of businesses have seen costs rise across the board, and are struggling with additional pressures.
