Banbridge Golf Club’s catering team have announced they are stepping back after “a very successful four years”, citing the cost-of-living crisis among their reasons.

A Facebook post from Chris and Marta who run The Clubhouse Grill said they were also “putting family first”.

Writing on September 25, they said:  “Unfortunately, we decided to step back from the role of caterer at the Banbridge Golf Club. We are immensely grateful for the support we have received from members and regular visitors.
“Our decision is mainly motivated by the fact that this time we put the family first, and as you know, our head chef is expecting a baby.
“Also, the current cost of living crisis, difficulties within the wider hospitality industry regarding attracting good chefs/staff, price increases that are difficult to cover, etc, it has come to a point when we need to take a break.
“We will miss the people and the work as at this stage we are going on a long and well-deserved holiday.”
It added: “Perhaps, we said “the end” now, although that does not mean that you will not see us in gastronomy in the future …
One more time, THANK YOU for a very successful FOUR years…
Chris and Marta,
The Clubhouse Grill Team.”

A new five-star hotel has been mooted for the Banbridge area primarily to service increased visitor numbers once a proposed £24m Game of Thrones attraction opens its doors.

The GoT exhibition, which will be based at the Linen Mill Studios and feature sets, props and costumes from the hit fantasy series, is expected to attract as many as 600,000 visitors a year.

Many of the most iconic scenes from the series were filmed at the Linen Mill Studios and its makers, HBO, are involved with the studio in developing the attraction which had been set to open to the public in October.

The suggestion that a five-star hotel could be built was raised earlier this month during a meeting of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council when the authority’s head of tourism, Brian Johnston, warned members that without a hotel in the vicinity, the new facilities might end up becoming a revenue generator for venues in Belfast and Dublin rather than the local region.

Deputy Lord Mayor, Kyle Savage, told the meeting that he believed a hotel would be an important facility once the new Game of Thrones attraction was in place.

And speaking to LCN this week, NI Hotels Federation chief executive, Janice Gault said that she felt a hotel development in the area would be ‘broadly welcomed’ by the hotel sector here:

‘The GoT series has real global reach and has attracted tourists to Northern Ireland who visit the many sites associated with the programme,’ she acknowledged. ‘The opening of the Linen Mills Studios could increase dwell times in local hotels in the area and may in the longer term create the need for additional hotel accommodation in the Armagh, Craigavon and Banbridge Council area. A number of schemes have been proposed in the location and this could be the driving force behind further expansion.’

No planning application has been made for a hotel at this time, but applications for the GoT-themed tour at the Linen Mill and a park-and-ride facility at Cascum Avenue in Banbridge are both still awaiting a decision by local councillors.

The tour, which should draw visitors from all over the world, was to have opened this autumn but Coronavirus-related delays mean that environmental impact displays relating to the tour itself have only just gone on display to the public.

Nevertheless, Brian Johnston recently assured councillors that the local authority was still ‘heavily invested’ in the project and that officers were regularly talking to John McGrillen of Tourism NI around support for local tourism businesses. Mr Johnston said that he understood that Tourism NI ‘really wanted the project to happen’ and therefore, was ‘putting great efforts into it’.

‘We have lots of confidence that this project will become a reality and we are very much on top of that,’ Mr Johnston told members.

Visitors to the proposed exhibition will be able to walk around the sets and view props, costumes and weapons from the show as well as learning some Game of Thrones special effects secrets.

Hospitality Ulster has referred the Coach Nightclub in Banbridge to the Responsible Retailing Code’s independent complaints panel over a post A-level party promotion for students.

The offending poster promotion used an image from the 2012 film, Project X, which depicted a young man lying face down, unconscious and surrounded by empty disposable drinks cups.

But Hospitality Ulster’s chief executive, Colin Neill, warned that ‘irresponsible promotions’ had no place in the industry. Condemning the Coach poster, he said:

‘We believe the imagery association with this promotion is unacceptable…No promotion should encourage the over-consumption or abuse of alcohol and licensees have a responsibility, both legal and moral, to ensure they promote the consumption of alcohol in a responsible way.’

Mr Neill said that with the growth in the popularity of social media, it was more important than ever to ensure that staff and promoters were aware of the Responsible Retailing Code.

The issue was discussed at length this morning (August 16) on BBC Radio Ulster’s Nolan Show phone-in programme. During the debate, Jim Wells of the DUP said that he thought the party promotion poster was ‘appalling’ and vowed to raise the issue with Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, which enforces licensing laws in the area.

‘The signal [Coach Nightclub] is sending out here is that you should drink yourself into the ground,’ said Mr Wells, who no longer speaks for the party since losing the whip. ‘I think this highlights the need for minimum unit pricing, which would stop this happening.

‘This message is ‘drink irresponsibly’, and, if you’re going out, drink until you fall flat on your face,” he said.

For its part, Coach Nightclub pointed out that its marketing of the post-exam celebration was in keeping with the marketing of the Project X film. The image, it pointed out, was taken from the cover of the movie DVD.

In a statement, Coach said:

‘While we understand the potential concern, our staff are trained to identify when patrons have potentially over-indulged. We have first aid staff on site at all times. We encourage responsible alcohol consumption. There are no drink-limited offerings and no sale of more than two spirit measures per serve.’

The promotional poster that’s caused a stir at the Coach in Banbridge.
